Atiyar Rahman, Khulna Office: Six BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists have been arrested in Khulna with homemade bombs, hammers and iron rods.
They were arrested in front of the Dighalia Upazila Election Office at around 3am on Tuesday (October 2).
The arrested are Ershad Ali Khan (33), Noab Ali (35), Asad Sheikh (32), Hasibur Rahman (22), Rafiqul Islam (45) and Alamgir Hossain (35). Among them, Alamgir Hossain is a Jamaat leader and the other five are local BNP leaders and activists.
Dighalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manas Ranjan Das country email list said that around 3 pm, BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists gathered in front of the Dighalia Upazila Election Office to create chaos. When the police arrived there based on a secret tip-off, they started throwing bricks and stones at the police. At one point, the police dispersed them by firing 5 rounds of shotgun pellets. At that time, the police arrested the six people from the spot along with 4 hand bombs, 2 machetes and a hammer. The rest fled.
The OC said that two cases have been filed at Dighalia Police Station under the Special Powers Act and the Explosives Act, naming 68 people and many unknown people in this incident.
